How I Fix Slow WordPress Websites

A Straightforward Approach to WordPress Speed Problems

When your WordPress website is slow, the first step isn’t installing another optimization plugin.

The first step is finding out why it’s slow.

My process is designed to identify the problems affecting your website’s performance and determine what can be done to improve it.

1. Tell Me About Your Slow WordPress Website

Start by contacting me and telling me what you’re experiencing.

You can provide your website address and describe the problem in your own words.

For example:

  • “My website takes forever to load.”
  • “My homepage is slow.”
  • “My WordPress dashboard is extremely slow.”
  • “The website suddenly became slow.”
  • “My site is slow on mobile.”
  • “I’ve installed several speed plugins but it is still slow.”

You don’t need to know what’s causing the problem.

That’s what I investigate.

2. I Investigate the Problem

Once I understand what’s happening, I investigate the website to identify potential causes of the slowdown.

Depending on the website, this may include looking at:

  • WordPress plugins
  • Themes
  • Images and media
  • Database performance
  • JavaScript
  • CSS
  • WordPress configuration
  • PHP
  • Hosting
  • Server resources
  • Caching
  • External scripts and services

The goal is to move beyond a simple speed-test score and determine what is actually affecting your website.

3. I Identify the Problems

Not every performance warning is equally important.

A speed-testing tool may produce a long list of recommendations, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every recommendation needs to be implemented.

I prioritize the problems that are most likely to be affecting the actual performance of your WordPress website.

Find the cause. Prioritize the problem. Fix what matters.

4. Ie Recommend a Solution

After investigating the website, I’ll explain what I found and what can be done.

Depending on the problem, the solution could involve changing a WordPress configuration, removing or replacing a problematic plugin, optimizing images, addressing database issues, changing caching settings, modifying code, or investigating the hosting environment.

I focus on practical solutions rather than making your website unnecessarily complicated.

5. I Fix the Problems

Once the appropriate solution has been determined, I can begin addressing the problems affecting your website’s performance.

The work depends on what I find.

There isn’t a single “make WordPress fast” button because every website is different.

A website with a plugin problem requires a different solution than a website suffering from large images, database problems, inefficient code, or inadequate server resources.

I fix the problems I find.

6. I Check the Results

After making changes, the website should be checked again.

The purpose isn’t simply to make a speed-testing tool produce a better score.

The goal is to improve the actual performance of the website.

We look at the changes made and determine whether they addressed the problems that were identified.

No Guessing. No One-Size-Fits-All Solution.

There are hundreds of WordPress performance plugins and countless articles explaining how to make WordPress faster.

That doesn’t mean installing more plugins is the answer.

A slow website needs to be investigated.

I don’t start with a solution and look for a problem.

We start with the problem and determine the appropriate solution.
